I work at LAX and we send people to the Hacienda everyday. It is a nice area with a couple of restaurants and a car museum within walking distance. Only about 2 miles south of LAX.

Take your hunt to lalife.com. You can see safe neighborhoods, crime rate, and school ratings. Start looking in the El Segundo area. Cities like Manhattan Beach are even better, but more expensive. You can also get good info on http://www.neighborhoodscout.com/ca/

I have visited that area as well and often wondered about the refinery sitting right next to a residential area. The Environmental Scorecard (Ref 1) has some information about emissions from the facility as reported through the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI). The Scorecard identifies the following toxic chemicals released with the number of pounds of pollutant released from stacks (2002 data): AMMONIA 145,822 N-METHYL-2-PYRROLIDONE 98,125 METHANOL 78,498 METHYL TERT-BUTYL ETHER 43,615 N-HEXANE 7,978 TOLUENE 2,675 XYLENE (MIXED ISOMERS) 1,610 BENZENE 1,482 PROPYLENE 1,470 ZINC COMPOUNDS 1,104 CYCLOHEXANE 986 HYDROGEN CYANIDE 639 1,2,4-TRIMETHYLBENZENE 329 ETHYLENE 288 ETHYLBENZENE 158 NICKEL COMPOUNDS 109 COPPER COMPOUNDS 105 TERT-BUTYL ALCOHOL 66 CARBONYL SULFIDE 59 NAPHTHALENE 33 HYDROCHLORIC ACID 26 LEAD COMPOUNDS 20 MERCURY COMPOUNDS 13 TETRACHLOROETHYLENE 3 1,3-BUTADIENE 1 45 POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC COMPOUNDS 1 PHENOL 1 BENZO(GHI)PERYLENE .300 There are also estimates of fugitive emissions (non-stack emissions). Quite a laundry list, and the facility comes up as the second-largest emitter of TRI substances in Los Angeles County.

try www.craigslist.com and click on the area you want, there should be tons listed. It's free to use, but you have to do the legwork--emailing ads you like and visiting the apartments, but there are no "rental agents" to charge you a hefty fee. Good luck!

3:30!! Moved from southern Ca. to here in Vegas & have driven many times! More people get off around 5 pm than 3:30.

manhattan beach and redondo beach are friendly areas. lots of street walking traffic, with dogs, etc. They are also pretty close by. I would stay away from anything too far north of LAX as the traffic on 405 is legendary. Marina Del Rey isn't too far though and is another nice area. 30 minutes could get you a good distance to the south/east. Parts of long beach are nice but some are not so be careful. Due east you have inglewood, hawthorne, compton, north long beach, etc. not too nice areas to live in. South of El Segundo you have some nicer safer communities. Parts of Torrance are nice as well as Harbor City, Lomita. Palos Verdes is nice but mostly very exclusive. A good portion of the Downey area as well as Cerritos, La Palma, Cypress, Los Alamitos areas are nice and safe but are probably on the edge of your 30 min commute and could be definitely longer with serious traffic. Generally I would go due south and west if possible, with marina del rey area and cerritos, la palma, cypress as other possibilities
